Wellesley make contact with Tim Peake

What an amazing, incredible experience! The culmination of a project for which the seeds were sown back in 2014 proved every bit as unforgettable as we had hoped, with the radio buildathon on Friday afternoon and then 22 visiting schools and a wide variety of activities on Saturday morning; this was  followed by the contact itself with Tim Peake aboard the International Space Station.

In spite of some problems making contact, when we could see and hear him but he could not hear us, the moment when we finally established communication was breath-taking, and the anticipation and the atmosphere in the Sports Hall were extraordinary.  This was a never-to-be-repeated event and we congratulate Ethan Becket and Benny Yu for their roles, having previously gained their amateur radio licences: they were both awarded Headmaster’s Commendations in Monday’s assembly.  Articles from Saturday’s event can be read on the BBC and ITV news websites, as well as at the Kent Online and Thanet Gazette websites.  Once again we must show our appreciation to Mrs Sabin-Dawson and to the many others who all helped bring this about – it will remain long in the memory.

The official ARISS video of the contact with the International Space Station can be viewed on Youtube by following this link.
